There is still confusion among many food manufacturers as to what is required in order to accurately label dietary fiber on a product. According to the FDA, “dietary fiber that can be declared on the Nutrition and Supplement Facts labels includes certain naturally occurring fibers that are “intrinsic and intact” in plants and added isolated or synthetic non-digestible soluble and insoluble carbohydrates that the FDA has determined have beneficial physiological effects to human health.”

Displaying voluntary nutrients on your Nutrition Facts label can serve a variety of purposes: helping consumers make more informed decisions, substantiating nutrient content claims, and advertising food fortifications. However, the regulations governing voluntary nutrients differ slightly from those governing mandatory nutrients, which are those required by NLEA labeling.

Because Added Sugars contribute empty calories to a diet, their overconsumption can make getting enough essential vitamins and minerals difficult. To encourage consumer awareness of Added Sugars in food products, the FDA’s 2016 Food Labeling Revisions established Added Sugars as a mandatory label nutrient and clarified the definition.

In the U.S., food labels and food packages are regulated by the FDA and the USDA. The vast number of documents published by these agencies pertaining solely to food labeling guidelines and regulations is mind-boggling, and finding specific regulations within these documents can be a challenge.

But REX® — ESHA’s online regulatory-compliance documentation search portal — simplifies this process by aggregating only relevant documentation or references and lets you pinpoint your search by keyword, tag or database.

On April 23, 2021, The Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education & Research (FASTER) Act was signed into law, establishing sesame as the ninth major U.S. food allergen. Previously, the FDA required only the declaration of whole sesame seeds as an ingredient. A food could, however, also contain undeclared sesame seeds under  uncommon names, such as tahini, or listed as a “spice” or “flavoring.” Food manufacturers now have until Jan. 1, 2023, to declare the presence of sesame as an allergen on their food package labels.
