Food and Nutrition Database

Food & Nutrition Database
I'm a big fan of the nutrition analysis software by ESHA Research. The databases are well researched and documented... Many of the recipe and nutrition sites on the web that include a nutrition analysis function are powered by ESHA databases, so depending on what your project entails you might want to pursue that option with ESHA as well.

ESHA's Food & Nutrition Database

Our reputation relies on the accuracy of our nutrition data, and we’ve been around a long time. We don’t just compile data; we make sure it’s correct, exhaustive and includes information you can’t get elsewhere. We do this because we know your business and your reputation rely on us.

The ESHA master database is composed of ingredients, recipes and other food items, with each item’s nutritional breakdown data for up to 172 data fields, including proximates (ash, moisture, protein, fat, carbs), vitamins, minerals, and other nutrient components. The nutrition team runs mathematical checks on the nutrient information to ensure data accuracy and integrity. In addition, we provide several calculated nutrient values, such as the percent calories from fat and niacin equivalents.

The data is gathered from more than 1,900 reputable sources, which include the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), the latest USDA Standard Reference database,  manufacturer’s data, USDA FoodData Central Brands, and more.

The nutritional databases that are shipped with our desktop software products are a custom subset of the ESHA master database. The Genesis R&D database contains more than 89,000 ingredients, including whole foods, multi-component ingredients, additives, chemicals, flavoring agents and other processing items. The Food Processor database is made up of more than 146,000 recipes, ingredients, restaurant and brand foods, and more.

For more information regarding the database, contact our Nutrition team at nutrition@esha.com. To make a submission to the database, click here.

There are many nutrition databases on the market today, which can make it difficult to select the right one for your business. This Nutrition Database eBook provides an overview of what to consider when comparing database solution.
